What comes to mind when you think about femininity?

What messages did you receive growing up — about what it means to be a "girl," a "boy," or someone in between?

This workbook invites you to reflect on how femininity is valued, restricted, or policed — and how those messages shape the way we parent.

Whether consciously or not, we all carry lessons from our own childhoods. And we often pass them on.

As caregivers, how can we help children expand their understanding of gender, rather than box it in? Can we raise kids without reinforcing the idea that femininity is "less than"?

Before You Dive In

In this workbook, you'll encounter terms like gender-neutral parenting and femme-conscious parenting. We'll explain these ideas, explore how they differ, and offer practices that support children in becoming their most authentic selves — regardless of gender or sex.

Explore As You Go

Some pages in this workbook include interactive elements — reflection prompts, activities, and opportunities to share your own responses. If you choose to share, your answers may be displayed anonymously on this site for future visitors to read, creating a growing collection of shared reflections from caregivers like you. Participation is always optional.

As you read, we invite you to notice the invitations to judgment — those subtle nudges we all receive to view femininity as less than. Part of this journey is learning to see them more clearly, and then deciding how you want to respond.

What You'll Find in This Workbook

This workbook is for anyone raising children in a world shaped by gendered expectations.

You'll explore:

  • 🟣 How early gender messages shape children's development
  • 🔵 What femmephobia is, how it operates, and why it matters
  • 🔴 Key concepts like the gender binary, gender socialization, and gender-based prejudice
  • 🟡 Common pitfalls in approaches to "gender-neutral" parenting
  • 🟢 Strategies for supporting femininity across all children's experiences

Where This Content Comes From

Academic Research

We've worked hard to make these ideas clear and accessible — though the topics are complex, and we know it's not always easy. That's why we've included a 📖Glossary at the end of the workbook with definitions and clarifications.

💡

Whether you're parenting a toddler or teen — or even reparenting your own inner child — this workbook is an invitation to imagine a more femme-positive future.
